The Thrill of Powder Skiing and Snow Cat Boarding in Canada

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Canada’s vast alpine skiable territory welcomes winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world with unequalled season vacation opportunities. The country is home to a multitude of ski and snowboard virgin slopes and remote downhill circuits, which spread from the coast of the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific shore.

An added benefit of choosing Canada as the playground for your next winter holiday consists in the cost-effective character of the skiing services offered here. However, if your budget allows it and you are prepared to spend more for a memorable adventure, you can always opt for accommodation at luxury mountain resorts, which welcome visitors with impeccable lodging conditions and specialty services.

Canada benefits from a longer season than other popular skiing destinations, generally spanning over a period of five months, from November to mid April. Yet, the Canadian skiing experience isn’t entirely restricted to this timeframe, and occasionally you may get the chance to practice quality powder skiing and snow cat boarding in other periods of the year as well.

Besides some very attractive downhill skiing and snowboarding opportunities, the large majority of the country’s provinces also allow for fantastic cross-country skiing adventures. If you are looking for engaging powder skiing options, it would be a mistake to limit your search to the high alpine crests of the Rockies; under the right weather conditions, many ski hills can provide a similar powder skiing experience, so don’t hesitate to try out this type of adventure too. Although there are many options worth checking out, consider starting with the ski hills in British Columbia Rockies, Alberta, and in the region of Whistler.

Canada also offers exciting opportunities for practicing backcountry skiing, which takes you to virtually untouched, wild mountain trails hidden in the heart of the mountains. According to your skiing or boarding proficiency level and depending on weather conditions, you can opt for one of two main approaches to backcountry skiing: you can travel to the slopes by snow cat, which is a specialized mountain vehicle used for carrying groups of skiers to higher mountain ground, or by helicopter. The latter option provides the ultimate backcountry powder skiing experience, as mountain helicopters can reach and cover more skiing ground, allowing you to explore even the most secluded mountain trails.

Despite the unique experience it provides, helicopter skiing isn’t without its drawbacks. The downsides to heli skiing are the higher underlying costs of the trips and the need to wait for favorable meteorological conditions before taking to the slopes. At the other end, while snow cat boarding and snow cat skiing may lack the edge of heli skiing, they fully compensate in terms of costs and allow groups to spend more time skiing. In a sense, snow cat boarding/ skiing and heli boarding/ skiing are complementary, as together they allow for a more comprehensive and more eventful powder skiing adventure. That said, if you get the chance, don’t hesitate to combine the two for double the fun and a maximum adrenaline rush.

Reasons Why Canada Is the Perfect Destination For Powder Skiing

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

To get absolute freedom from your deep powder skiing trip, you definitely need to turn away from noisy and congested ski resorts and instead immerse yourself into the world of backcountry wilderness, where the soft powder is intact and just perfect for skiing. The mild murmur of the wind and the sizzling of your skis as they dash through the immaculate veil of snow quickly become hypnotic, giving you the impression that you have crossed over into a magical realm where time and space no longer have an effect on you.

And especially when you combine powder skiing with the versatility and adventurous nature of snow catskiing, the whole skiing trip will feel like a dream come true.

Starting with the sumptuous Rocky Mountains in the west and all over to the picturesque Laurentians in the east, the Canadian mountain scenery stands out as the perfect place to spend your ski and snowboard vacation. Many of the regular and luxury mountain resorts found in the region were founded back in the 60s, when pioneers of extreme winter sports began their quest for challenging, secluded ski circuits blessed with the best possible snow. Since then, the Canadians’ main strive and ambition has been to bring into existence some of the world’s finest ski resorts that would allow all avid skiers in the scene to enjoy the thrill and excitement of quality powder skiing.

One of the reasons why Canada has become such a popular skiing destination lies in the great diversity of skiing options found in the area. At present, you can for instance choose to spend a memorable winter ski vacation in the bosom of Selkirk, Purcell, Cariboo and Monashee Mountains, which welcome visitors with deep and untouched powder snow, fresh air, and loads of fun skiing. You can enjoy peaks higher than 11,000’ and magnificent landscapes, and around 6000 vertical feet of varied scenery will be waiting for you on arrival.

In addition to all that, thanks to the large density of ski resorts in both the West and the East of the Canadian mountains, you can easily explore several during your holiday. If you like the sound of it, then you can opt for a multi-resort holiday, which apart from helping you spice up your snow catskiing experience, will also allow you to discover more of the amazing Canadian panorama.

Numerous Canadian ski resorts have undergone a process of improvement and expansion in recent years, which means you nowadays have access to modern and fast ski lifts, diversified entertainment options and impeccable accommodation conditions. All companies operating here are highly competitive, well organized and determined to ensure the best possible experience for their clients.

In case you haven't yet tried snow catskiing or experienced the magic of powder skiing in North America, then you should definitely schedule a skiing trip here for your next holiday. The huge amount of quality powder available in the region, the diversity of the slopes, the beauty of the landscapes and good balance between low-budget and luxury mountain resorts renders this place perfect for skiers looking for the experience of a lifetime.

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Most people, from all walks of life, strive to improve their lives through hard work and determination, but all the long hours spent many time behind a computer screen can really take its toll on our lives. It is very important to disconnect from work every now and again just to make sure you remember what is it you are working so hard for. There are numerous activities suitable for vacations. While some people may be satisfied with visiting a distant location just to soak in some sun and become regular clients of the local club scenes, there are many people that want to make the most out of their free time through activities that allow them to break completely free from work.

One of these highly challenging activities is cat skiing BC. Catskiing BC is already considered one of the top sports for people from all over the world. Skiing is a great sport, but once you get to a certain level it is getting pretty hard for it to give you all the thrills you are looking for. If you ever find yourself in this situation then you should know that cat skiing BC is just the thing you are looking for. To get a better idea, skiing is to heliskiing BC just what rally racing is to city driving. There are quite a few destinations for this sport but catskiing Canada seems to be one of the main attractions for people enjoying this sport. There are a number of reasons for this, but generally people prefer catskiing Canada for the great and diversified opportunities available in this part of the world.

Catskiing Canada is one of the best ways in which you can combine pleasure with skills and thrills, and create yourself memories which will last a lifetime. When you go catskiing you don?t have access to the regular luxuries such as ski lifts, and small stores where you can buy a coup of coffee and this is why not everyone is doing this. Cat skiing BC will give you a lot of freedom and unforgettable thrills but you will also have to contribute with some courage and abilities. If you are keen on having an unforgettable vacation this year and want to try out something that really puts your skiing skills to good use then catskiing Canada is the perfect choice and you should also know that there are more than one ways in which you can get to the top of the mountain.

One option would be to go for snowcat skiing services, which make use of powerful and reliable snowcats to take you and your friends up the mountain. The only shortcoming of this option is that there are certain limits in regards to height and terrain. The other option is heli cat skiing BC. This type of service uses helicopters to bring customers to dizzying heights and it is considered to be the top of the range when it comes to cat skiing BC.

Why Go Lay In the Sun When You Can Go Heliskiing?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Heliskiing is definitely one of the most fun activities you can have during your free time. I guess the only strong competition can come from jumping with a parachute from a plane or flying a glider, because only these two give you the same rush you get from catskiing down completely virgin slopes. There is a danger factor of course, but this only makes it all that more attractive. In fact, this is why all the experts are strongly advising against relative beginners going heliskiing or on any other catskiing adventure. One of the nicest things about heliskiing is that you can have the helicopter take as high as you want and select your preferred spot for making your descent. With the great publicity around heliskiing and catskiing in general, more and more people have been drawn to this sport and consequently the prices are now notably lower, so this great sport is affordable to most people.

There are some logistics issues that need to be taken care of prior to getting your skis on. One of the most important is getting accurate local information for the region you intend to go heliskiing in. Sure, there is a certain dose of risk involved in any catskiing trip, but there are also numerous risks that you are better off avoiding all together. For example, avalanches are one of the biggest dangers but if you get the correct information, the risks are practically non-existent. The helicopter pilots employed by the companies that specialize in these types of services are well trained to recognize certain zones that are particularly dangerous, and must also ensure a safe extraction for the heliskiing parties they are responsible for. Canada, for example, is great for heliskiing enthusiasts of all levels.

Because this country’s geography is so varied, there are numerous opportunities for people interested in this sport. For those that are on a tighter budget and would like something a little cheaper than heliskiing, there is always another option which is catskiing. People going for this alternative get access to the remote slopes by using snow cats that can navigate through even the roughest terrain. In order to meet the needs of more people, companies specializing in presenting customers with this type of service, offer a wide range of service packages.

These usually range from 3 to 7 days, and more. These catskiing offers include lodging and transportation, so that the customers’ only worry is to find the best possible slopes. Because there are such a great variety of destinations across the world, you can find a spot that meets all your requirements. Also, companies specializing in these services also present their customers with special offers for larger groups, but you should always check with the company to see if what options they can offer you if your group is too large or too small for their helicopters, because many companies only have helicopters of specific sizes.

A Guide on How to Snowboard on Your Winter Ski Vacation

Monday, April 12th, 2010

There are several ways to learn how to snowboard, the exercises you can do, cool tricks you can try, and forms you need to focus on. There are also quite a few guides for skiing as well – think of this guide as your own personal Colorado ski lesson.

The Basics: One of the first few things you will learn when you start to snowboard is the simple process of strapping in, standing up and adjusting your position. You should feel comfortable in the position you are in. Hopefully you chose the right gear such as board and shoes for the board. If you still need help with this, I suggest visiting a specialty store that specializes in snowboarding or heli ski.

Manners: When it comes to carrying your snowboard you need to make sure that you watch out for people and other objects on the slope. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself or someone else. This means no goofing around, and always having your eyes in front of you. In the same way that people take their turns in a car at a stoplight, you need to take your turn and pay attention when it comes to the slopes.

Skating: This is a really novice position, it means keeping one foot in the boot and one foot out of the boot. This is a good position to follow when you are going on flat areas or sections or when you are getting on or off a chairlift.

Moving up the slope: While most places have chairlifts, you can also move up the slope on your own as well – as long as it’s not too steep. This can be done by slowly inching your way up the slope, feet in boots, and hands on ground in front of you.

Traversing: This is how you will essentially control your speed on the board, it will also help you to learn how to balance yourself as well. The heel side is all about standing on your board in a “side-ward” position. Try leaning to each side slowly and see how quickly you can regain your composure.

Linking Turns: This is obviously how you are going to link together your different turns. Your body should be to the side, along with your snowboard or snowcat skiing facing forward. Be sure to bend your knees! Your body (feet and legs) should be outward when your body (waist, chest, shoulders) are inward and vice versa. This is going to help keep your balance off kilter.

Side-slipping (heel side & toe side): This is all about controlling your descent down the slope. The heel side is used with the heel or back of the board whereas the toe side is used with the toe or front of your board. Overall, this is about slowing down and “breaking” to a halt. Definitely a good thing to learn how to do!

Hopefully these few steps and exercises will help you out on your next trip on a winter cat skiing vacation or snowboarding exhibition! Snowboarding and skiing can be a lot of fun, but as said above, it’s also important that you follow certain skill sets and that you practice. Be sure to check out some of the Colorado ski packages and Colorado snowboard packages online! And remember to have fun!
